Starting a new business and staying cyber safe

Hook Collective is a new small business in the bustling heart of Brisbane, set amid skyscrapers and jacaranda trees.

This property-focused communications agency, led by a team of five millennial women, has embraced cyber safety with expertise, despite, or maybe because of, their ‘new kid on the block’ status.

For Aimee Cadan, the Head of Corporate at Hook Collective, cyber security is not just a policy — it’s part of daily operations.

Starting cyber strong

“As a new company, we want to get everything right from the get-go,” she says.

“Our reputation with client data is paramount and on a personal level, the financial risk is always lurking in the back of my mind. As a start-up, a significant financial loss could be devastating.”

Aimee recently completed the Cyber Wardens eLearning course, taking on the mantle of the official Cyber Warden at Hook Collective.

“We want to make sure we’re doing everything we can to keep our company cyber safe,” she says.

Georgie Hook Collective

Safeguarding client data

Brand and Client Development Manager Georgie Verhoeven agrees, and says a dedicated Cyber Warden has helped the team develop good cyber habits.

“We manage confidential multi-million-dollar tenders and proposals so safeguarding client data is paramount,” Georgie says.

“When everyone is stretched thin, it’s reassuring to have someone like Aimee ensuring our cyber systems are secure.”

Making cyber security a team sport

Georgie says the company talks about cyber safety as a team effort.

“These days it feels that cyber threats are everywhere, and one person’s bad habit can endanger the entire business.”

With cyber threats changing daily, Aimee says the team are used to safe practices, such as unique logins, using a password manager, two-factor authentication, turning off the computer at night and tiered access to the company’s systems.

“Anything new can take a while to get used to, but these systems have quickly become automatic,” says Aimee.

“We know cyber threats evolve all the time, so we keep up to date and follow Cyber Wardens newsletter and socials.

“We know the future of our business is bright, but we also want it to be secure.”

With Cyber Wardens, you can keep your digital floors clean and free of cyber criminals fishing.
